Nightlife in London: pubs, clubs and getting home on the Night Tube
London's nights out are long, loud and spread across a city the size of a small country. Pick your area, sort your ride home and you're set.
The short version
- The legal age to buy and drink alcohol in a pub is 18. Bring photo ID, because doors and bar staff ask [1].
- A pint in London averaged £6.55 in a 2026 trade survey, against £5.34 across the UK [2]. Finder's April 2026 numbers put a London pint at about AU$10.05 and a Sydney pint at about AU$10.35 [3].
- There's no single closing time. Each venue's licence sets its own hours, so some pubs shut at 11pm and some clubs run till dawn [4].
- The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights on five lines [5].
- Drug penalties are serious: possession of a Class A drug carries up to 7 years in prison [6].
Where to go out: the main areas
London doesn't have one nightlife strip like King Street or Chapel Street. It has a dozen, and each has its own crowd. Most Aussies end up with a "home" area near where they live and a couple of others for big nights.
| Area | Vibe | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Soho and the West End | Busy, central, a bit of everything | Pre-theatre drinks, cocktail bars, LGBTQ+ bars, late food |
| Shoreditch and Hoxton | Warehouse bars, street art, younger crowd | Weekend nights, DJ bars, late openings |
| Camden | Grungy, music-first, markets by day | Gigs, rock and indie pubs |
| Brixton | Loud, diverse, big music venues | Gigs, reggae and dance nights, Friday crowds |
| Peckham | Rooftops and railway-arch bars | Summer evenings, creative crowd |
| Clerkenwell and Farringdon | Old pubs by day, big club by night | After-work pints, then fabric |
| Southwark and London Bridge | Historic pubs, river views | Pub crawls, Borough Market drinks |
| Clapham | The famous Aussie and Kiwi stronghold | Weekend sessions, sport in the pub |
If you're living in south-west London, Clapham is where a lot of Australians first find their feet. If you're north or east, Shoreditch and Camden are your easy wins.
Pubs, bars, rooftops, clubs and live music
Pubs
The pub is the centre of London social life, and the after-work pint starts as early as 5pm on a Thursday. People drink standing outside on the footpath in summer, and nobody minds.
- The George Inn, 77 Borough High Street, Southwark. The National Trust calls it London's last remaining galleried inn. It dates from the 17th century and is run by Greene King as the Trust's tenant.
Two things that surprise Australians. First, you order and pay at the bar, and there's usually no table service. Second, rounds are sacred. If someone buys you a drink, you buy the next one.
Rooftop bars
- Sky Garden, 1 Sky Garden Walk, in the City. Entry to the garden is by free ticket, booked ahead. It has several bars and restaurants and stays open till midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday. Book early, because free tickets go fast.
Peckham and Shoreditch also have seasonal rooftop bars that open from spring to early autumn. Check the venue's own site before you go, as they come and go with the weather.
Clubs
- fabric, 77a Charterhouse Street, Farringdon. One of the world's best-known techno and drum and bass clubs, with FABRICLIVE and fabric nights listed for November 2026.
- Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, Elephant and Castle. The club that started in 1991 and became a global brand.
Big clubs often sell out online. Buy tickets in advance rather than queueing on the night.
Live music and jazz
- Ronnie Scott's, Soho. The famous jazz club runs a main show, Upstairs at Ronnie's and a Late Late Show, with weekly sessions listed into December 2026. Some upstairs shows are door sales only.
Camden and Brixton are the places to look for gigs. Check listings a few weeks out, because popular shows sell out.
Prices: a London night out vs home
London isn't as brutal as its reputation, at least next to Sydney and Melbourne. The pint comparison is close. Cocktails, entry fees and the taxi home are where the bill climbs.
| Item | London (2026) | Australia (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Average pint, UK | £5.34 [2] | — |
| Average pint, London | £6.55 [2] | — |
| Pint, London (Finder) | about AU$10.05 [3] | Sydney about AU$10.35 [3] |
| Cocktail in a central bar | Often well above the price of a pint | Similar story in Sydney and Melbourne |
| Night Tube fare | Off-peak fare, no extra charge [5] | — |
The 2026 trade survey that found the £6.55 London average was a poll of pub operators, not an official statistic [2]. Prices in Mayfair, the City and tourist pubs run well above it. Prices in suburban locals run below.
Tips for keeping costs down:
- Drink at a local pub, not the one next to a tourist site.
- Look for happy hours in Soho and Shoreditch cocktail bars, usually early evening.
- Pre-book club tickets online. They're often cheaper than on the door.
- Use the Night Tube or night bus instead of a cab where you can.
The rules that catch Australians out
Drinking age and ID
You must be 18 to buy alcohol or drink it in a pub or restaurant. It's also an offence for an adult to buy alcohol for someone under 18 [1]. Bouncers and bar staff check ID often, especially if you look young. Carry your passport or a UK photo card. An Australian driver's licence may or may not be accepted, depending on the venue.
Closing times
Forget the old idea of "last orders at 11". Since the Licensing Act 2003, each venue's licence sets its own hours, and closing times vary from pub to pub [4]. Many pubs still call last orders around 11pm on weeknights. Bars and clubs with late licences run to 2am, 3am or later.
Drinking in public
Drinking on the street isn't automatically illegal in London. But many boroughs have public spaces protection orders. In Hammersmith and Fulham, for example, police and council officers can ask you to stop drinking and hand over your alcohol if they think it's linked to anti-social behaviour. Refuse and you can be fined £100 or prosecuted [7]. A quiet can in the park is usually fine. A rowdy one isn't.
Drugs
UK drug laws are strict, and being a visitor won't help you. Maximum penalties for possession are [6]:
- Class A (cocaine, ecstasy/MDMA): up to 7 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
- Class B (cannabis, ketamine, amphetamines): up to 5 years, an unlimited fine, or both. For cannabis, police can instead give a warning or an on-the-spot fine of up to £90.
- Class C (including nitrous oxide): up to 2 years, an unlimited fine, or both.
Nitrous oxide is a Class C drug, so the balloons you might see at festivals are illegal to possess [6]. Many clubs search bags at the door.
Getting home safely
The Night Tube and night buses
On Friday and Saturday nights, the Night Tube runs on the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines, roughly every 8 to 20 minutes depending on the line. Some branches aren't covered. A night Overground service runs between Highbury & Islington and New Cross Gate [5]. You pay the normal off-peak fare with contactless or Oyster, and daily caps still apply. No cash [5].
On other nights, and for places off the Tube map, London's night buses cover the whole city [5]. Download a journey planner app before you head out.
Taxis and ride-hail
Black cabs can be hailed on the street when the yellow TAXI light is on. Minicabs, including ride-hail apps, should be booked through an app or licensed operator. Don't get into a car that pulls up offering a ride. If you're using an app, check the number plate and driver match before you get in.
Staying safe on a night out
London is a big city with big-city problems. Phone snatching is common in busy areas, so keep your phone in a front pocket, not in your hand at the kerb.
Drink spiking happens. Drinkaware says that if you or a friend feel strange or more drunk than you should, get help straight away [8]. Tell bar staff or security, stay with your friend and don't let them go home alone or with someone you don't know [8].
| Number | Use it for |
|---|---|
| 999 | Emergencies: police, ambulance, fire |
| 101 | Non-emergency police, including reporting suspected spiking |
| 111 | NHS non-emergency health advice |
Save these in your phone before you go out [8].
Find people to go out with
The hardest part of London nightlife is often the first few weeks, when you don't know anyone. Join Cooee UK, our Facebook group for Australians in the UK. Members post pub meetups, footy screenings and "anyone keen for fabric on Saturday?" threads, so you won't be heading out alone for long.
