Renewing your Australian passport overseas: fees, timing and the traps
Renewing from abroad is slower and dearer than doing it at home, and you can't do it from your couch. Plan it like a small project, not an errand.
The short version
- From overseas you lodge through an Australian embassy or consulate. The online renewal service only works if you're in Australia [1][2].
- In 2026 an adult 10-year passport costs A$611 overseas: the A$422 fee plus a A$189 overseas surcharge. You pay the equivalent in local currency [3][4].
- Allow at least six weeks. Overseas applications can't use the faster processing options sold in Australia [1].
- Applying overseas generally cancels your current passport, so don't book travel around the gap [1].
- Lost or stolen passports are cancelled as soon as they're reported, even if they turn up later [5].
Can you renew online from overseas?
No. Online passport renewal through myGov is only for people in Australia. The application asks you to confirm you're in Australia, and the passport office advises against travelling overseas while it's processing [2]. If you happen to be home for a few months, that's your window to do it the easy way.
From overseas, you complete the application online or on paper, then lodge it in person at an Australian embassy, high commission or consulate and pay the fee there [1]. Each post runs its own system, so check its website for appointment bookings, opening hours and how it returns passports.
Who can renew, and who must apply as new
You can use the renewal process as an adult if your current passport [1]:
- was issued when you were 16 or older, on or after 1 January 2006
- was issued with at least two years' validity
- shows your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender
- hasn't been reported lost, stolen or cancelled
You'll need to present it when you lodge. If you don't fit those rules, you apply for a new passport instead, and that needs a guarantor who has known you for at least 12 months [1].
Children's passports can't be renewed at all. You apply for a new one each time, with consent from everyone who has parental responsibility, and 16- and 17-year-olds must attend in person [1]. Our guide to citizenship by descent covers first passports for babies born overseas.
What it costs in 2026
Passport fees are set in Australian dollars and indexed each year, with no GST. Overseas, a surcharge is added on top of the standard fee, and you pay the Australian dollar amount in local currency, usually by card [3][4].
| Document | Standard fee | Total when applying overseas |
|---|---|---|
| Adult 10-year passport (18 and over) | A$422 | A$611 |
| 10-year passport (16 or 17) | A$422 | A$514 |
| Child 5-year passport (under 16) | A$213 | A$305 |
| Optional 5-year passport (75 and over) | A$213 | A$402 |
| Emergency passport | A$265 | A$265 |
| Replacement passport (damage, name or gender change) | A$265 | A$265 |
Fees effective 1 July 2026, as published by Australian posts overseas [4].
The surcharge is A$189 for adults and seniors and A$92 for children [4]. In Australia, priority processing costs an extra A$308 and Fast Track an extra A$107 [3][6], but those options don't apply to applications lodged overseas [1].
How long it takes
The passport office says to allow at least six weeks from the day you lodge [1]. For applications in Australia, the standard timeframe is up to six weeks, made up of lodgment, up to 20 business days of processing and postage [6]. Overseas, it says plainly that processing times may vary, and delivery depends on where you are [6].
That leads to the big trap: when you apply to renew overseas, your current passport will generally be cancelled, so you can't use it to travel or as ID while the new one is made [1]. Any time left on the old one doesn't carry across either. The new passport runs from its issue date [1].
A sensible renewal timeline
- Check your expiry now. Many countries want at least six months' validity on arrival, and some visa applications want more.
- Start about nine to twelve months out. That gives you room around holidays, posted workloads and courier delays.
- Check your visa. If your residence permit or visa is linked to your passport number, find out how your new country handles the switch before you apply.
- Book the embassy appointment and gather your form, photos and original documents. Anything not in English needs a full translation [1].
- Leave a gap with no travel. Assume six weeks plus delivery with no passport.
- Update everyone afterwards: your bank, employer, airline loyalty profile and any visa authority.
Lost or stolen overseas
Report it as soon as you can. If you're overseas, contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate [7]. The moment a passport is reported lost or stolen, it's cancelled to stop anyone using your identity, and the details are shared with Interpol and border agencies [5]. If it turns up in a jacket pocket next week, you still can't use it.
Lost and stolen passports can't be "replaced". You apply for a brand-new one [7]. Be careful: if you lose two or more passports in five years, you're generally limited to a reduced-validity passport. That's five years after two losses, and two years after three or more, unless you can show you took reasonable care and it was out of your control [5].
If you need to fly urgently
An emergency passport is for people overseas who urgently need to travel. You apply at an embassy or consulate, it costs A$265, and it lasts up to one year [4][8]. It has no chip, so some countries restrict its use; check the rules for every country you'll enter or transit through [8]. You can apply for a full passport at the same time, but then both fees apply [8].
Dual nationals: which passport, when
If you hold two citizenships, the rules are simple at the Australian end and less simple at the other.
- Leaving and entering Australia: use your Australian passport. Airlines may refuse to board you for Australia without proof of Australian citizenship [9].
- Your other country: you can usually use its passport, but that country may not treat you as Australian, which can limit the consular help Australia can give you. Some countries also require exit permits, and some require military service from their nationals [9].
- Applying for the other passport: you usually don't need to post your Australian passport overseas. A colour copy or digital upload is often enough, and sending it away can leave you stranded if you need to travel [10].
Keep both passports valid if you can. Renewing them on staggered timelines means you're never without a travel document.
Small things that save a second embassy trip
Most delays come from small, avoidable problems rather than the passport office itself.
- Photos. Australian passport photos have strict size and background rules, and a local photo booth may not meet them. Ask the embassy or check its website before you print.
- Name changes. If you've married or changed your name overseas, bring the original foreign certificate and an approved English translation [1]. A name that doesn't match your current passport means you can't use the simple renewal route.
- Delivery. Ask how the post returns passports. Some use couriers, some ask you to collect, and some cities have long distances to the nearest consulate [1].
- Track it. Keep your application number so you can check the status online [1].
- Keep copies. Store a scan of your passport's photo page somewhere you can reach from any device. It makes a lost-passport report much faster.
