Nightlife in Athens: world-class cocktails, late dinners and the Saturday all-night metro

Athens goes out late, stays out later and does it with surprisingly good drinks. If you're used to Melbourne's Greek scene, the real thing will still surprise you.

The short version

  • Greece's 2025 law requires anyone buying alcohol to show valid ID proving they're over 18, and bans minors from bars and clubs that serve alcohol [1].
  • Athens bars are now ranked among the world's best: three made the World's 50 Best Bars 2026 list [2].
  • A pint in Athens averaged about AU$8.45 in April 2026, against about AU$10.35 in Sydney [3].
  • Since 2025, metro lines 2 and 3, the T6 and T7 trams and a set of bus routes have run through Saturday night into Sunday morning [4][5].
  • Smartraveller says drug penalties in Greece, even for small amounts, include heavy fines and prison sentences [6].

How an Athenian night works

Greeks eat late and drink slowly. A night out often looks like this:

  1. Coffee or a drink at sunset, often somewhere with an Acropolis view.
  2. Dinner at 9.30pm or 10pm, usually a long, shared meal.
  3. Bars from about midnight. This is when the cocktail bars fill.
  4. Clubs from 1am or 2am, running well past sunrise on weekends.

Drinking to get drunk is not really the Greek style, and loud, messy behaviour stands out. Order food, share it and pace yourself.

Where to go out: the main areas

Area Vibe Good for
Psyrri Narrow lanes packed with bars, busy late Bar hopping, meze and drinks
Monastiraki Touristy but fun, rooftops with Acropolis views Sunset drinks
Syntagma and the centre Office crowd by day, top cocktail bars by night Serious cocktails
Gazi and Kerameikos Old gasworks area, clubs and big bars Late nights, younger crowd
Exarchia Student, alternative, political Cheap drinks, rock and indie
Koukaki Residential, near the Acropolis Wine bars, low-key evenings
Kolonaki Upmarket, well-dressed Dressier bars, people-watching

Smartraveller notes that petty crime is a serious issue in tourist areas including Monastiraki and Syntagma Square [6], so keep an eye on your phone and wallet in exactly the places you're most likely to be drinking.

Bars, rooftops, clubs and live music

Cocktail bars

Athens has become one of the world's great cocktail cities. In 2026, Line was named No. 1 on the first Europe's 50 Best Bars list [7], and three Athens bars made the World's 50 Best Bars 2026 [2]:

  • Line, ranked No. 5 in the world in 2026 [2]. Known for a fermentation-led approach, with house-made wines, beers and ingredients reused across the menu [7].
  • The Bar in Front of the Bar, ranked No. 19 in 2026, up from No. 47 in 2025 [2].
  • Barro Negro, Paparigopoulou Street in central Athens, ranked No. 40 in 2026 and specialising in agave spirits [2].

Award-listed bars get busy, especially on weekends. Arrive early, go on a weeknight or check the bar's social media for bookings and hours.

Rooftops

Monastiraki and Psyrri are full of rooftop bars with views of the Acropolis, mostly on top of hotels and apartment buildings. They're best at sunset, priced for the view and often need a booking in summer. Check a rooftop's own site or social media for current hours before you go.

Clubs

Gazi is the main inner-city clubbing area, with bigger venues around the old gasworks. In summer, a lot of Athens nightlife moves outdoors and down to the coast along the Athens Riviera, while many inner-city venues slow down. Line-ups change by season, so check listings before heading out.

Live music

Exarchia is the place for rock, indie and small gigs. For something more Greek, look for live rebetiko or laïko nights at tavernas, which usually start late and run into the small hours.

Prices: an Athens night out vs home

Athens is cheaper than Sydney for a beer, but award-winning cocktail bars and rooftops charge accordingly.

Item Athens (2026) Australia (2026)
Pint of beer, average about AU$8.45 [3] Sydney about AU$10.35 [3]
Cocktail at an award-listed bar Well above a beer Similar to a good Sydney cocktail bar
Rooftop drink with Acropolis view Priced for the view —
Club entry Varies by night and venue —

Finder's figures are April 2026 averages built from Expatistan and Numbeo data [3]. Expect to pay more on a Monastiraki rooftop and less at a student bar in Exarchia.

The rules that catch Australians out

Drinking age and ID

Greece passed a law in 2025 that requires buyers to show valid ID proving they're over 18 to buy alcohol [1]. Minors can't enter, stay in or work at entertainment venues that serve alcohol, including bars and clubs, and venues face fines of up to €10,000 and possible suspension for breaking the rules [1]. Even if you're well over 18, carry ID, because venues have a strong reason to check.

Closing times

Athens bars and clubs run late, and on weekends many stay open until sunrise. Hours depend on the venue's licence and the season, so don't assume a bar you liked in winter is open in July, or the other way round.

Drinking in public

Smartraveller's Greece page doesn't set out public drinking rules [6]. In practice, take your cue from locals: drinks are usually enjoyed at a table, not walked around the streets. Keep noise down near homes late at night.

Drugs

Smartraveller says penalties for drug possession, use or trafficking in Greece, even small amounts, include heavy fines and prison sentences [6]. Australians are subject to Greek law. Don't buy from strangers in Psyrri, Monastiraki or anywhere else.

Getting home safely

The Saturday all-night service

Athens launched 24-hour Saturday public transport as a pilot on 5 July 2025 [4], and it became a regular Saturday service from 13 September 2025 [5]. It covers:

  • Metro Line 2 (red): about every 10 to 15 minutes overnight [4].
  • Metro Line 3 (blue): regular trains every 9 to 15 minutes, and airport trains about every 36 minutes [4].
  • Trams T6 and T7: about every 15 to 25 minutes overnight [4].
  • Buses: night lines plus routes 164, 221, 608, 703, 842, 049, A15, B11 and B12 [4][5].

Strikes and works can cancel night services, so check OASA's site or app on the day. On other nights, plan for a taxi.

Taxis

Smartraveller's advice is to use only licensed taxis, make sure the driver uses the meter, and ask for a receipt and check it [6]. Book through a taxi app or flag one down at a rank rather than accepting a ride from someone who approaches you.

Staying safe on a night out

Smartraveller's advice level for Greece is "exercise normal safety precautions" [6]. It also warns of drink spiking with the intention of sexual assault [6]. Watch your drink being made, don't leave it unattended and look after your mates.

Number Use it for
112 Fire, rescue and medical emergencies [6]
+30 210 322 2230 Tourist Police, Athens main office [6]
+61 2 6261 3305 Australian 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre [6]

Find people to go out with

Athens is friendly, but nights out here are built around groups. Join Cooee Greece, our Facebook group for Australians in Greece, to find people for a late dinner in Koukaki, a cocktail crawl or a Saturday night that ends on the first metro home.
